Holistic Holistic refers to a philosophy of considering each individual element in its relationship to the whole. Holistic medicine, for example, tends to treat the whole person instead of concentrating on the symptoms or causes of illness. Aiming, thereby, to lessen the illness by lessening all of the factors that contribute to it and giving relief and treatment through many means aside from just medication or surgery. Alternative medicine emphasizes improving the quality of life for people with chronic illness; disease prevention; and treatments for conditions that conventional medicine cannot adequately control, such as arthritis, chronic pain, allergies, cancer, heart disease, and depression. A cornerstone of alternative medicine is the idea that the mind influences the health of the body. Encarta® Encyclopedia 2000.©
